For Kiaf Art Fair 2023, Rachel Uffner Gallery is pleased to present new bodies of work by Bernadette Despujols, Sheree Hovsepian, Anna Jung Seo, Talia Levitt, Erica Mao, and Joshua Petker.

Following her debut solo exhibition at Rachel Uffner Gallery in June, Talia Levitt (b. 1989, Brooklyn, NY) will present two new trompe l'oeil paintings disguised as elaborate, multi-layered textiles. Replete with symbolic imagery ranging from vanitas and memento mori to urban New York city life to domestic interiors, Levitt’s intricate compositions reflect her Jewish heritage and her conflicting relationships with womanhood, death, labor, and urban life.

London-based artist Anna Jung Seo (b. 1964, South Korea) will present a selection of small oil paintings on board. Her presentation at Kiaf follows her participation in Encounter, a 2022 group show at Rachel Uffner Gallery. Jung Seo’s colorful portraits and landscapes are intimate, psychological examinations of human relationships with each other and with the natural world.

Following her inclusion in the 59th Venice Biennale, Sheree Hovsepian (b. 1974, Iran) will present two small assemblages that continue her investigation into the materiality of photography and the strength and sensuality of the human body. Hovsepian held her first solo exhibition at Rachel Uffner Gallery in September, 2022.

Bernadette Despujols (b. 1986, Venezuela) presented her first solo exhibition in the upstairs space at Rachel Uffner Gallery in September 2021. For Kiaf, she will present two figurative works featuring her signature impasto brushwork, creating complex, rich paintings that celebrate family, intimacy, and femininity.

Joshua Petker (b. 1979, Los Angeles, CA) held his first solo exhibition at Rachel Uffner Gallery in June, 2022. For Kiaf, he will present two large canvases that draw inspiration from anonymous historical works, evoking the familiar and the uncanny through layered compositions and a dreamy, nocturnal palette.

Finally, Erica Mao (b. 1994, Columbia, MD) will present a selection of paintings and ceramic sculptures inspired by the regional mythologies of her homes in Maryland and Taiwan. In scenes that Mao describes as “pseudo-Biblical”, ghostly humanoid figures wander the treacherous terrain and haunting skies, searching for shelter and salvation. The artist held her first solo exhibition at Rachel Uffner Gallery in March, 2023.
